What is the program?

How does it work?

Waste to Energy

How can you participate?

OUR RECYCLING PROGRAM

When using our recyclinlg program we guarantee that your old carpet won't end up in a landfill, period.

When you get ready to replace the carpet in your facility, we'll reclaim your existing carpet tile or broadloom and either recycle, down cycle, or repurpose it. . We'll reclaim any brand.

HOW DOES RECYCLING WORK?

The program was put into place in order to provide a service through which you can reclaim and recycle all of the carpet removed from your installation sites. It just doesn't make sense to throw away carpeting that may still have a useful life for nonprofit organization in your community, or a new life recycled and remanufactured into a new product.

NYLON CARPET
The nylon fiber that forms the face of most carpet is the most valuable component of the product. It is derived from a nonrenewable resource: petroleum.

While the ultimate goal is to be able to use old nylon to make new carpet, that technology does not currently exist in our industry. Our recycling program is geared towards utilizing recovered nylon by down cycling it into other products such as molded car parts and pad underlay. In some cases, we've been able to design new floorcovering products containing a high percentage of recycled materials.

RESILIENT TILE FLOORING
100 percent recyclable and can be remanufactured back into the same products.

CARPET TILE
If reclaimed carpet tile is in good condition and is from Interface Flooring Systems or Bentley, the tile is cleaned and donated to a community charity. Otherwise, all approved vinyl-backed tile is returned to Interface Flooring Systems facility in LaGrange, Georgia for processing. Nylon is then recaptured through shearing and sent to Ford Motor Company, and the backing is ground up for use as raw material in new backings.

BROADLOOM CARPET
Broadloom carpet is reclaimed and sent to one of several recycling facilities to be chopped and baled. Unfortunately, it can't be repurposed because the backing is destroyed in the removal process.

The reclaimed material is then processed and converted to raw material for car parts, used to make carpet padding and industrial matting, or, if no other options are available, converted to energy.

WASTE TO ENERGY

Although waste to energy is not our preferred method of disposal, it is a better option than putting carpet in landfills, and it serves as an interim solution to Nylon 6,6.

Ogden Martin has fourteen facilities in the US where they use old carpet for a waste-to-energy process. They take old carpet and heat it in a forced air furnace to create steam. A turbine generator then turns the steam into electricity. The resulting electricity is used to heat local schools and other facilities around the community.

HOW YOU CAN PARTICIPATE

Register a request for repurposed carpet

Floorcovering can sometimes be removed and repurposed within your own facility in break rooms or storage areas, or donated to local non-profit organizations. Our providers will evaluate the condition of your product and determine whether it is a suitable candidate for repurposing. To date, we have donated more than 158,000 square yards of repurposed flooring to a variety of community and non-profit organizations such as Goodwill, Boys Club of America, and Habitat for Humanity, as well as churches and other charity organizations.

Recycling doesn't just make economical and environmental sense, it is also financially sound. It can often cost more to put carpet in a landfill than to reclaim it. Companies typically pay for transport of old carpet, and are then charged between a dime and a dollar per yard in landfill fees. In most cases, the cost to reclaim the carpet is less or roughly equivalent. If you have old carpet you'd like to reclaim, a member of our team can help you. Please just tell us about your project and a service expert will contact you. info@cir-resource.com
